Festivals and Events

Aberfest

Aberfest (AberfalBretonEasterRonnieFESTival) 2008 is a three day festival incorporating In Falmouth, Tregajorran and Carrick Roads. Events include a huge dance display on the moor, and several musical events and workshops, many of them free.

Fal River Festival 2008

The Fal River Festival  is one of Cornwall’s most exciting and wide-ranging festivals, and returns in 2008 for its third year with a series of events on and around the picturesque River Fal. A celebration of a remarkable estuary that breathes life into villages, towns and communities along its banks.  The festival runs from Saturday 24th May – Sunday 1st June 2008 and brings together a diverse mix of cultures,art,music,food,literature,drama,gardens and natural history all based along or on the river.

The game basically involves two teams of hundreds of men competing with each other to get a special ball - (by almost any method short of getting in a car and driving away with it) from a central  starting point to one of the two goals, each a mile from that point.

Cornwall Film Festival

Cornwall has its own film festival. In 2008, the Cornwall Film Festival will run from 6th - 9th November. The festival includes various screenings, including films by local talent, lectures and workshops. A new feature will allow budding film makers from all over the world to enter their efforts.

Fowey Royal Regatta

One of Britain' most popular sailing events and involves a display by the red arrows and also children's entertainment.  The Fowey Royal Regatta takes place evey august. 

Hurling

Hurling is a medieval game - a rough and ready Cornish traditional sport played (on the whole) in good humour.  A game is played every year by the residents of St. Columbe on Shrove Tuesday and the residents of St. Ives on the nearest Sunday to the 3rd February in two separate.

Padstow Obby Oss

Unaccompanied singing in the streets of Padstow from midnight April 30th to welcome in the first the first day of summer - May 1st. Musicians, mostly accordian players and drummers parade during the day, along with dancers including the two "'Obby 'Osses", the "Old" and the "Blue Ribbon". The "'Obby 'Osses" are costumed to look roughly like (very modernly fashionable) horses. The whole ceremony of events ends at midnight around the maypole. Highly traditional, the event is believed to date from 4000 years ago.

West Country Film Fiesta and Day at the Races 2008

Running from the 23rd to the 24th of August The West Country Film Fiesta and Day at the Races involves live music, craft and charity fairs, a beer tent and of course many, many balloons. The "Day at the Races" part involves pantomime horse races.
