Established by an actress called Rowena Cade in 1931, the Minack Theatre ("Minack" means "a rocky place" in Cornish) is an outdoor theatre situated on a the Cliffside near Porthcurno Beach. The setup is in the style of a Roman ampitheatre.
The first performance was of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in the summer of 1932. Back then, the lighting was supplied by whatever was available such as batteries and car headlights. All sorts of shows are played out here these days, although Shakespearian plays are still regularly performed.
The theatre can be visited in the day, but shows are mainly on in the evening. Shows are very popular and the 2008 programme is already available.
The season runs from May to September for 17 weeks. As it is an open-air theatre, the shows are subject to the weather, but as this is usually favourable in Cornwall very few are actually cancelled.
